Intro to Job Function Based Testing

A woman is lifting a box during a Job Function Based Test. This is the first in a series of articles about JFTs.

Hello my name is Ginnie Marshall and I am the CEO of DSI Work Solutions. Thank you for joining me in this series on Job Function based testing. It is a tremendous tool when it is well designed and well supported by objective evidence. The objective evidence comes from the job analysis process we explored in our recent series on job function based analysis and documentation.

As long as the testing is designed to reflect the job- and reflects how employees are assigned to their jobs, it can be used anywhere in the continuum of an employee’s tenure with a company- from the hiring and onboarding process, through the years of employment, and if an illness or injury impacts an employee’s ability to work. Testing can also be used to assist employees as they navigate through the normal aging process.

The key is to be sure that the testing accurately reflects the physical nature of the jobs, and also accurately reflects how individual employees are assigned to and work in those job(s). The value of this type of design is that it does not limit its use to one area only- such as post offer of employment. Since the testing reflects the job’s most essential requirements, it will be consistent with business necessity.

Therefore, the type of job function based test design we will be exploring affords employers the opportunity to use it whenever and wherever they have a need in the continuum described above. So, as long as the job analysis documentation is kept up to date, and the testing procedure is consistently applied, it will support an employer’s goal to maintain a safe and stable workforce. And importantly, it will be  both effective and in legal compliance.

In this series we will be exploring the six opportunities associated with Job Function based testing. After that we will look into the important considerations that need to be addressed in order to assure stakeholder acceptance and legal compliance. Next we will examine some examples of function based tests in common jobs- ones that everyone should be familiar with. Finally, we will present some common questions and answers as it relates to providing function based testing services.
